About Us
Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded by Emily & Steven Goudy of Fort Gratiot, MI. They started the Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer in 2010 after one of Emily’s closest friends shared that her older sister was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. This news hit very close to home, as Emily’s sister was the same age and they had also been childhood friends. At that moment, Emily decided she wanted to do more and brought that news to Steve and the idea for the calendar and human ribbon were born.

Over the years they have spend their time raising funds for breast cancer patients in St. Clair County. Working with the St. Clair County Community Foundation, McLaren Foundation, Lake Huron Foundation, St. John's Ascension Foundation and Hunter Hospitality House to ensure the needs of breast cancer patient are met.
The goal to make "FUN"draising events entertaining and a great time for all. Our first event was our Human Breast Cancer Ribbon in September of 2009. Since then, we've added a 5K Run & 2 Mile Walk, brought back the Badges & Bras event, and started Pink Tie Gala.

In loving memory of Cheryl Belanger & Ellen Hoover.
Ellen Hoover - Our first and forever board member
5.27.1958 - 10.09.2025
Ellen has been part of Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer since our very beginning in 2009. She was the first person we asked to join our Board of Directors — I’ll never forget the moment at Rockin' the Rivers when we asked her to be our first board memeber, and she smiled and said, “Me?” with that mix of humility and excitement that was so her.
Ellen stood by us through every event, every fundraiser, and every Human Ribbon — all 15 of them. Her unwavering dedication and survivor spirit embodied the heart of our mission.
We find comfort knowing that Ellen is reunited with the love of her life, Seth. We will miss them both dearly, but their legacy will continue to shine through the work we do for the breast cancer community here in St. Clair County.
Thank you, Ellen, for believing in us from day one. We’ll carry your light forward, always.

Cheryl Belanger

Cheryl has been part of Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer family since our very first Human Ribbon in 2009. Through the years, we’ve shared countless conversations and hugs, and I’ve watched her fight her battle with breast cancer with courage, grace, and grit. These last five years have been incredibly hard on her, yet she gave absolutely everything she had—right up to the very end.
I feel incredibly grateful to have had the chance to quietly say goodbye to her, and to embrace Bill and the entire Belanger family. Cheryl, it’s your time to rest now. Please give Ellen and Seth a big hug from me. We will carry your love, your strength, and your legacy forward in all that we do.
